A handloom is a weaving frame operated entirely by a person — with hands and feet, no motors. Each thread is placed with intention. The tension, the rhythm, the pressure — all of it is controlled by the weaver's body and skill, built over years of practice.
A powerloom, by contrast, runs on electricity. It is faster, cheaper, and consistent — but that consistency comes at a cost to the fabric itself.
What Powerloom Does to Wool's Natural Properties
Wool fibres are naturally crimped — microscopic coils that trap air, regulate temperature, and give the fabric its softness. These crimps are delicate. High-speed powerloom machinery generates friction and mechanical stress that flattens and damages these natural fibre crimps.
The result? A shawl that may look similar on a shelf but has lost much of what made the wool special:
- Reduced temperature regulation — the air-trapping crimp is compromised, so the shawl doesn't insulate as effectively

One of wool's most remarkable qualities is that it works in both directions: it keeps you warm in cold weather and cool in warm weather. This is not magic — it is the science of the wool fibre's structure. The natural crimp creates tiny air pockets that act as insulation, adjusting to your body temperature.
